The first true thing the Bible says about you is not that you are a sinner. It is that you are a creature. Before the fall, before the law, before the gospel, there is a more basic fact: you were made. You did not call yourself into being, you cannot sustain yourself in being, and one day you will return to the dust you came from. This is not an insult. It is the foundation of everything, and modern people have almost entirely forgotten it.

We live under a quiet command to be more than creatures. Be limitless. Optimize. Hustle. Sleep when you are dead. The culture treats human finitude as a bug to be patched rather than a gift to be received, and so we exhaust ourselves trying to be everywhere, know everything, and answer to no one. We have, in a word, tried to be God. It is an old temptation. It was the first one.

But to be a creature is to be gloriously, mercifully limited. You can only be in one place. You can only do a few things well. You need to sleep, which means that every night God runs the universe without your help, and it turns out fine. Your limits are not failures of design. They are the design. They are the constant, bodily reminder that you are not the center, not the source, and not the one holding it all together.

This is good news for a tired generation, because it means you are allowed to stop. The pressure to be infinite was never from God; He never asked you to be Him. He asked you to be a faithful creature in a particular place, with particular gifts, for a particular span of years, and then to hand it all back. The Sabbath is the oldest argument against your self-importance. The world kept turning before you arrived and will keep turning after you leave, and that is precisely why you can rest tonight.

There is a deep relief in this, the relief of a child who realizes the family does not depend on him. To say I am a creature is to say there is a Creator, which means the weight you have been carrying was never yours to carry. You can lay down the impossible job of being God, a job you were always going to fail, and take up the good and possible work of being human.

Settle this before anything else. You are not the Maker. You are the made. And the One who made you looked at the work and called it good. Let that be enough. Let that be rest.

We say we believe in grace, but most of us live as though we must qualify for it. We imagine a God who waits at the top of a staircase, arms folded, watching to see whether we will climb high enough to deserve a smile. So we postpone Him. We will pray when the anger cools. We will return to church when the habit is broken. We will come back to God once we are someone worth of acceptance.

This is exactly backward, and it is the first thing the gospel insists on correcting. Grace is not a reward for the repaired. It is the cause of the repair.

The whole scandal of the cross is its timing. Scripture is precise about it: while we were still weak, while we were still sinners, while we were still enemies. Not after we improved. Not once we showed promise. The love came first, into the wreckage, before the cleanup, with no guarantee of return. A God who only loved the finished product would not be good news. He would be merely a critic with better manners.

The father in the parable does not wait at the top of the road for a polished speech. He runs while the son still smells of the pig pen, still rehearsing his apology, still expecting to be hired as a servant. The embrace interrupts the confession. The robe comes before the resume.

This matters because the false gospel of self-repair never ends. There is always one more flaw to fix, one more reason to keep God waiting in the foyer of your life. You will never be clean enough on your own terms, because the standard keeps moving and the mirror keeps finding more. To wait until you are worthy is to wait forever.

So come now, unfinished. Come with the habit unbroken and the anger still warm. The point is not that your sin does not matter; it does, and grace will go to work on it. But the work begins with welcome, not with worthiness. You do not climb the staircase to find God. He has already come down it to find you.

Settle this before anything else, because everything else depends on it. You are not loved because you are improving. You are able to improve because you are already loved.

Sanctification rarely happens on the mountaintop. It happens in traffic, in the inbox, in the unglamorous middle of a normal Tuesday. We imagine formation as a dramatic event, a retreat that changes everything, a single decisive surrender after which the struggle is over. But the desert fathers knew it as something far less cinematic: the slow grinding-down of a self that resists transformation, repeated daily, mostly unwitnessed, often boring. They fled to the desert not to escape temptation but to meet the truest version of it, the one that has nothing to do with spectacle.

The real battle is not the spectacular temptation but the petty irritation: the resentment rehearsed in the shower, the unkind word that felt so justified, the prayer skipped because the day got loud, the small dishonesty that smoothed an awkward moment. These are the unimpressive places where character is actually decided. No one writes a testimony about the Tuesday they chose not to be bitter. But the soul is shaped far more by ten thousand such Tuesdays than by any single dramatic moment on a stage.

The good news is that grace meets us precisely there, in the ordinary friction, not in spite of it. God is not waiting for us to engineer a more impressive arena for holiness. He is at work in the commute and the kitchen and the difficult colleague, sanding down the false self in the only place it ever actually lives, which is the present, unremarkable moment. The friction is not an interruption of the spiritual life. It is the spiritual life, the actual material God uses.

This is why a small, faithful rhythm of life outlasts every spiritual high. A few minutes of silence before the noise begins. An irritation named and confessed rather than nursed. A single verse carried into the afternoon like a stone in the pocket, returned to between meetings. None of it photographs well. None of it would fill a conference hall. But practiced over years, it does what the mountaintop never could: it slowly makes you into someone who can be trusted with love. Holiness, in the end, is mostly what you do with your Tuesdays.

Christian hope is constantly mistaken for optimism, and the mistake is costly. Optimism is a prediction: it expects things to improve, the trend to bend upward, the situation to work out. It is a reading of the odds. Hope, in the biblical sense, is nothing of the kind. It does not predict that the next year will be better than the last, and it is not embarrassed when history gets worse. Hope is not confidence about the trajectory of events; it is confidence about the character and promise of God, anchored in a future he has already guaranteed.

This is why the New Testament can speak of hope in the same breath as suffering without contradiction. The early Christians were not optimists; they had every reason not to be. Their hope was eschatological, fixed on the resurrection of the dead and the coming of a kingdom they could not yet see. It rested not on improving circumstances but on an empty tomb, on the conviction that the decisive event had already happened and the end was therefore secure. You can lose every earthly argument for optimism and still possess this hope intact, because its ground is not the news but the risen Christ.

Getting this distinction right changes how we live now. Optimism, when reality disappoints it, curdles into despair or denial. Hope does neither. It can look squarely at decline, injustice, and death, name them honestly, and refuse to be ruled by them, because it knows how the story ends. Eschatology is not escapism; it is the opposite. The person who is sure of the ending is freed to engage the present without the desperation of those who think everything depends on their winning. You can plant trees, love the difficult, and resist evil without needing to see the harvest, because the harvest is promised.

So when people ask whether I am hopeful about the future, the honest answer is that hope is not really about the future as a forecast at all. It is about the One who holds the future. The world may get darker before it gets light, and Christian hope does not require pretending otherwise. It requires only that the tomb is empty and the promise is sure, and on that ground it can sing in the dark, not because the dark is not real, but because it is not the end.

Every argument has a floor beneath it, the things you assume before you say a word. We spend most of our energy arguing the second and third things while quietly skipping the first things, and then we wonder why we never agree. We are not really disagreeing about the surface. We are disagreeing about the foundation, and pretending otherwise.

So let me try to name a few of the first things, the convictions that come before the conclusions. Before we argue about the church’s strategy, we have to settle what the church is for. Before we argue about cultural engagement, we have to settle who is Lord. Before we argue about methods, we have to settle what we believe the gospel actually is. Skip these, and every later argument floats untethered.

The first thing is that God is, and we are not Him. This sounds obvious until you watch how often our anxiety reveals that we have forgotten it. So much of our frantic activity is functional atheism, living as though the outcome depended entirely on us, as though God had stepped out and left us in charge. The first thing humbles us before it does anything else.

The second thing is that we are creatures, made and loved and accountable. Not autonomous, not self-defining, not the authors of our own meaning. This is either unbearable or it is the most liberating thing in the world, depending on whether you trust the One who made you. Everything downstream of this conviction looks different than everything downstream of its denial.

The third thing is that the gospel is news before it is advice. It announces what God has done, not primarily what we must do. Get the order wrong and Christianity collapses into moralism, a self-improvement program with religious vocabulary. Get it right and even our obedience becomes a response of gratitude rather than a frantic attempt to earn what was already given.

I would like this publication to keep returning to these foundations. Not because the second and third things do not matter, they do, but because we cannot reason well about them until the first things are settled. A house argues about paint colors. A wise builder checks the foundation first.

So before we go anywhere else together, let us get the first things in their place. Everything else, it turns out, depends on them.

Somewhere in a server farm, a version of you is being assembled. It is built from your clicks, your purchases, your pauses, the things you lingered over and the things you scrolled past. To the systems that increasingly shape our lives, this is who you are: a profile, a probability, a pattern to be predicted and a behavior to be nudged. The algorithm does not hate you. It simply does not believe you are anything more than your data, and it is very good at acting on that belief.

This is a first-things question, because before we argue about screen time or privacy policy, we have to settle something deeper: what is a human being? The whole age presses one answer on us. You are a consumer to be optimized, an attention span to be harvested, a set of preferences to be served back to you until you forget you ever wanted anything else. It is a small and degrading anthropology, and we are absorbing it without noticing.

Scripture’s answer is older and stranger and infinitely larger. You are made in the image of God. Before you produced a single data point, you bore a dignity that no system conferred and no system can revoke. You are not the sum of your behaviors. You are not your worst search or your most-clicked weakness. You are a creature loved into being and held in being by a God who knows you in a way no algorithm ever could, not as a pattern to exploit but as a person to redeem.

The difference matters enormously, because the two anthropologies produce two entirely different kinds of people. If you are only data, then you can be manipulated without wrong, used without guilt, discarded without loss. But if you are an image-bearer, then there are things that must never be done to you, and a worth in you that no engagement metric can measure. Every abuse begins by first reducing a person to less than a person. The defense of human dignity always begins by insisting they are more.

This is not merely about how we resist the machine. It is about how we treat each other. The same logic that turns you into a profile turns your neighbor into a category, your opponent into a caricature, the unborn and the dying and the inconvenient into problems rather than persons. A church that has lost the doctrine of the image will have nothing distinctive to say in an age that is busily reducing everyone to their usefulness.

So here is a first thing worth recovering and repeating until it is reflex. You are not your data. Neither is anyone else. There is a glory hidden in the ordinary person beside you that the algorithm cannot see and was never built to honor. To treat people as image-bearers: unpredictable, irreducible, infinitely valuable is becoming a countercultural act. It may turn out to be one of the most important things the church needs to do in this century.
